Protect the free parking provision in Harrow and Wealdstone Town Centres

The Issue

For years, Greenhill Way & Davey House Car Parks in Harrow Town Centre and Palmerston Road Car Park in Wealdstone Town Centre have provided a real boost to our local community. Soon, Conservative run Harrow Council along with the Parking/Transportation Department will soon be removing elements of the free parking provision currently in place and introducing new charges at certain times of the week.

This includes;

  • Removal of Evening Free Parking after 6.30pm (all week) in Greenhill Way Car Park and Davy House, Lyon Road Car Park (Harrow Town Centre)
  • Removal of Free Evening Parking (Mon - Sat) and All Day on Sundays in Palmerston Road Car Park (Wealdstone Town Centre)
  • We are also concerned by the reduction in Maximum Stay in Canons Park Parade, Whitchurch Lane, Merrion Avenue, Neptune Road, The Gardens and West Harrow (4 hours to 2 hours).

These changes will have a detrimental impact on local businesses, shoppers and community organizations in Harrow Town Centre and Wealdstone Town Centre alike. This is directly at odds with the council's priority to support for local businesses, not to mention their promise to put residents first.

What this means for local businesses and shoppers

Too many local businesses have been forced to close already. Removing elements of weekend and evening parking would especially impact the many independent businesses, who rely on free parking at certain times of the weekend / evenings. This could discourage residents from visiting Harrow and Wealdstone Town Centres'.

These car parks are heavily used by local residents during the weekend and evening times to support the day and night-time economies. For the Council to ignore shopkeepers, restaurants, cafes and other evening operating businesses along with community run & faith facilities is unacceptable.

Lack of consultation

This has come as a complete shock to the local businesses. The recent silent consultation was not uploaded to the MyTalk Harrow Webpage which residents and businesses are familiar with and to install tiny signs in small print on lampposts we feel disrespects businesses and residents who rely on their local High Streets. These changes will be implemented without proper consultation.

Our request

We, the undersigned, oppose the Conservative run Council's plans to;

  • Remove Evening Free Parking after 6.30pm (all week) in Greenhill Way Car Park and Davy House, Lyon Road Car Park (Harrow Town Centre)
  • Remove Free Evening Parking (Mon - Sat) and All Day on Sundays in Palmerston Road Car Park (Wealdstone Town Centre)
  • We are also concerned with the reduction in Maximum Stay in Canons Park Parade, Whitchurch Lane, Merrion Avenue, Neptune Road, The Gardens and West Harrow (4 hours to 2 hours).
