These rising costs are unsustainable, putting immense financial strain on businesses that are already operating on thin margins. In addition, inefficient terminal systems lead to prolonged wait times and increased operating costs, eroding the profitability and stability of companies trying to meet the demands of the supply chain. Furthermore, siloed communication from shipping lines exacerbates operational challenges by causing misinformation or delays in crucial information transfer.
To safeguard the drayage industry and, by extension, our national supply chain and economy, we urge policymakers to consider the following solutions:
1. **Review and regulate insurance premiums**: Implement measures to protect drayage companies from exorbitant insurance rates, perhaps through subsidies or legislative caps, to ensure these businesses remain viable.
2. **Improve terminal operations and efficiency**: Revamp and innovate terminal management systems to streamline operations, reduce wait times, and enhance productivity, decreasing costs and safeguarding jobs.
3. **Enhance communication standards**: Foster collaboration between shipping lines and drayage companies to ensure accurate, timely communication and information sharing.
