Protect the Boundary Waters from sulfide mining
The Issue
As a resident of the Ely area, this petition is incredibly personal to me. This is not just a debate about policy or politics; it concerns the very essence of where I live, the community I belong to, and the landscape that gives life to this region. The Boundary Waters is integral to Ely's identity. It draws people from every part of the country and around the world to experience this unique northern Minnesota gem. It is foundational to our local economy, supporting businesses like our outfitters, lodges, and restaurants, and it plays a critical role in conserving this natural environment for future generations.
Yet, sulfide-ore copper mining threatens this vital watershed. Such mining is risky and has a legacy of pollution. During the last two centuries, every single sulfide-ore copper mining operation has leaked hazardous contaminants into surrounding areas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified hard rock mining as the top source of water pollution in the country. Given these facts, allowing sulfide-ore copper mining near the Boundary Waters is a gamble with disastrous potential consequences for our water, wildlife, and way of life.
We urge the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner to exercise due diligence by refusing to issue any state permits for sulfide-ore copper mining in the Boundary Waters watershed. We also call for the revocation of any existing mineral leases in this region that are under state jurisdiction. Furthermore, utilizing every legal mechanism available under Minnesota law to protect the Rainy River watershed as well as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is imperative to safeguard against this irreversible threat.
We also appeal to U.S. Senators, especially those who voted to overturn the moratorium prohibiting such mining activities, to reconsider their position. It’s crucial for these lawmakers to acknowledge the voices of their constituents who prize the Boundary Waters for its pristine beauty and ecological importance. The stakes are indisputably high and any ecological damage could be permanent, affecting not only local residents like myself but millions who cherish this wilderness globally.
By signing this petition, you affirm the importance of preserving the Boundary Waters and protecting it from the pollution and destruction posed by sulfide-ore copper mining. Together, we can ensure this natural treasure is safeguarded for generations to come. Please sign and share this petition to take an active stand in the fight to protect our environmental heritage and the unique quality of life that the Boundary Waters offer us all.
