Protect Surry County Farms: Update Noise Ordinance to Regulate Ultrasonic Devices

The Issue

Surry County’s noise ordinance hasn’t been updated since 1995 — long before ultrasonic devices became common. These devices are now causing serious problems for local farms, families, and animals.

Ultrasonic devices emit high-frequency sounds designed to deter animals. While intended for pest control, these sounds can extend far beyond property lines, impacting neighbors, livestock, and even public safety.

As a local farmer in Surry County, I’ve experienced firsthand how harmful these devices can be. Over the past several months:

My chickens stopped laying eggs for eight months until I moved them farther away from my neighbor’s ultrasonic device.

One of my horses began showing severe anxiety and dangerous behavior, making me consider selling him. When I moved him to my front yard — away from the pasture — I witnessed the ultrasonic device trigger, causing him to panic again. This reinforced my belief that these devices were the root cause of his distress.

Surry County is an agricultural community, and farmers rely on the well-being of their animals to support their livelihoods. Without proper regulation, ultrasonic devices can cause:

✅ Loss of income for farmers

✅ Dangerous situations for livestock handlers

✅ Negative effects on pets and wildlife

✅ Disruption to peaceful home environments

We’re calling on the Surry County Commissioners to update the current noise ordinance to include:

1️⃣ Boundary Limits — Ensuring ultrasonic devices do not emit sound beyond the user’s property.

2️⃣ Distance Guidelines — Establishing minimum distance requirements from roads, neighboring homes, and livestock areas.

3️⃣ Warning Signage — Requiring clear signage for properties using ultrasonic devices.

Sign this petition today to help protect our agricultural community, ensure safer conditions for livestock, and improve quality of life for all Surry County residents.

Together, we can ensure our farms, families, and animals are protected from harmful noise pollution.
