Protect Students: Prevent SouthWestern Advantage Recruitment at UM Career Fair

The Issue

DEADLINE: October 1st 2024

SouthWestern Advantage is coming to the University of Michigan career fair October 1st and I need your help to prevent that from happening due to the company's (alleged(for legal reasons stating this)) business practices.

SouthWestern Advantage is a MultiLevel Marketing Company that sells books through a network of distributors.

They recruit college students from campuses across the globe in order to sell these books with a promise of an "internship" and income claims starting at around $8,000 to $12,000 over the summer.

In reality, the opportunity is to sell books door to door out of state, only earning commission, no base pay at all; thus these students are not guaranteed an income.

According to previous participant testimonials, they encourage their reps to knock on doors of homes with "no solicitation signs" and have them sell door to door by themselves, not in groups. This is especially concerning considering that they lobbied against the  Malinda's Traveling Sales Crew Protection Act, which was supposed to provide protections to sales crews, but now only applies to crews of 2 people or more.

There are also reports of them not taking sexual assault at the hands of the customers, whose doors these students are knocking on, occurring on the job seriously.

There is even a full on private facebook group of alumni that have shared this exact same experience and that discourage users from doing the program.

They have been banned from recruiting on campuses across the country including Harvard, University of Birmingham and University of Maryland.

They have no place at the internship fair/career fair due to these practices so please help me protect students from their deceptive practices by signing this petition.
