Every school day, hundreds of children and teens use the crosswalk at the signalized intersection on NW 185th Avenue between Rock Creek Elementary School and Westview High School. Despite clear signals, drivers regularly run the red light at high speeds even during pick-up and drop-off hours.

Recently, a Rock Creek Elementary School child was nearly struck in the crosswalk. That near miss could have been a tragedy, and it’s not an isolated incident. Parents, students, and staff have witnessed this over and over again.

We’re asking Washington County’s Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) to:

• Conduct an immediate traffic-safety study at this crossing.
• Install a red-light enforcement camera to deter dangerous driving.
• Evaluate and add any needed safety measures such as longer pedestrian signal times, flashing school-zone beacons, or crossing guard support.

This section of 185th Avenue is a busy, high-speed roadway that cuts directly between two major schools. Children should never have to risk their lives to cross the street to class.
