For generations, the native Red Squirrel has been a cherished symbol of the British countryside, but they are vanishing. The primary culprit is the invasive Grey Squirrel, which now dominates the landscape, aggressively competing for food and spreading the fatal Squirrel Pox virus. This isn't just a threat to wildlife; it's an erosion of our natural heritage. Conservationists and communities who passionately protect these beautiful animals are fighting a losing battle with outdated, inefficient methods, watching the native Red Squirrel population dwindle to isolated pockets.

What is at stake?

If we fail to act now, the Red Squirrel will become extinct in mainland Britain within our lifetimes. However, what is also at stake is the opportunity to solve this crisis with intelligence and ethics. Continuing with current control methods is costly, labour-intensive, and often ineffective at the required scale. What we need is a game-changing technical solution. If we secure the support and investment needed, we can implement an engineered solution that is humane, highly selective, and scalable nationwide, offering a genuine, permanent future for native species.

The Engineering Solution 

I am a Qualified Mechanical Design Engineer and patented inventor (specialising in high-level automated machinery). I am applying my high-level engineering skills to develop a humane Grey Squirrel trap—a technological solution vital for saving the UK's native Red Squirrels.

The solution to the Grey Squirrel crisis is not more manpower, not breed-reduction chemicals, not shooting; it is precision hi-tech electro-mechanical engineering. Current methods struggle because they are not selective, require constant human monitoring, and cannot be deployed at the necessary scale.

Our focus is on developing a Species-Selective Control Technology that will offer:

HUMANE CERTAINTY: A mechanism engineered for instantaneous, certain, and humane dispatch, meeting the highest ethical standards.
ZERO-ERROR SELECTIVITY: Utilising advanced mechanical and sensing techniques to ensure only Grey Squirrels trigger the system, completely protecting Red Squirrels and other non target species. (e.g. other small mammals and birds.)
SCALABILITY & AUTOMATION: A design for a robust, autonomous unit that can operate in remote areas for long periods, vastly reducing operational costs and accelerating population control across the UK. 

Introducing the Hard Truth: Elimination is Necessary 

The challenge of saving the Red Squirrel demands brutal honesty. The reality is that reduction is not enough for our native species to recover, the invasive Grey Squirrel must be eliminated from key areas, and ultimately the whole of the UK. We must embrace the logical and biological truth: No single breeding pair can remain. While this goal is uncompromising and may be viewed as extreme, our engineering focus is on ensuring the required action, which is lethal, is delivered with absolute humane certainty. This technological solution is the only path to permanent, large-scale success, trading temporary squeamishness for the long-term ethical commitment of securing the Red Squirrel's survival in the UK.
