Thank you for signing our petition to protect Pumicestone Passage and the Northern Inter-Urban Break.
We have a major update!
The Queensland Government’s own planning agency — SARA — has now recommended refusal of both the Coochin Tourist Park and the Coochin Fields Music Festival proposals.
SARA’s assessments confirm:
- No overriding need in the public interest – there is no significant adverse economic, social or environmental impact on the community if the proposed developments do not proceed in this location.
- No justification for their location within the NIUB
- Adverse environmental impacts on Ramsar wetlands and National Park
- Serious bushfire and access risks – to both visitors and local residents
- Incompatibility with surrounding rural uses and amenity of local residents
- Non-compliance with sections of the Planning Regulation 2017 and the inability to achieve compliance with these provisions through the imposition of conditions
- Not consistent with the Regional Plan Regional Landscape and Rural Production Area (RLRPA)
- Conflicts with the expressed core values of the NIUB identified in ShapingSEQ 2023.
Despite this, the Planning Minister still holds the power to approve the developments. The developer has recently submitted a response to the Minister’s request for more information regarding the tourist park. The developer's response regarding the mega music festival and outdoor exhibition is pending.
To reflect these developments, we’ve updated the petition text to include SARA’s findings and reinforce our call for the Minister to reject both proposals. We’re committed to transparency and want you to know exactly what’s changed and why.
📢 What you can do next:
- Share the petition with your networks — we need more people to understand what’s at risk and more voices!
- Contact your local MP and the Minister’s office to express your concerns.
- Stay tuned! —there is a public consultation phase for each development. The Tourist Park consultation opened 27 October and closes 17 November. Public submissions will be critical to the final decision. A coalition of very concerned Sunshine Coast resident and environmental groups is reviewing the information and will provide key points to help individuals make submissions.
