Yesterday, one of our members recorded a short video explaining what the planned closure of the gym and fitness facilities at Stockport Sports Village means to them personally. We've now been contacted by the MEN and he is likely to be interviewed this week.

In the video, the member explains that this facility is not just somewhere to “work out”, but a core part of their routine, health, and mental wellbeing. They describe how Stockport Sports Village is accessible, familiar, and supportive — and how losing it would leave them, and many others, without a realistic alternative. The message is clear: for many people, especially older members, being told to simply “go elsewhere” ignores the reality of mobility, confidence, routine, and mental health.

What comes through most strongly is a sense of frustration and disbelief that such a significant change to a public, council-owned facility could happen without proper consultation, and without clear answers about why community fitness is being removed in the first place.

This video reflects what we are hearing again and again:

  • this closure is not a minor inconvenience
  • it will reduce physical activity and increase isolation
  • it risks long-term harm to mental and physical health across the community

What more you can do to help right now
If you are reading this and want to help push for answers and accountability, here are simple but effective actions:

1️⃣ Add a comment to this petition
Explain why this facility matters to you. Personal stories matter — they show decision-makers this is about real people, not abstract plans.

2️⃣ Comment publicly on Lisa Smart’s Facebook post
Ask politely but firmly:

  • why there was no meaningful public consultation
  • how the decision was reached
  • how closing one of the area’s largest public gyms benefits residents

3️⃣ Email Lisa Smart or your local MP
Even a short email asking for transparency on:

  • the finances
  • the decision-making process
  • how community health is being protected

Public facilities, public land, and community health should not be reshaped quietly.
This campaign is about transparency, accountability, and protecting wellbeing.

Thank you for continuing to speak up — it really does matter.
