In response to our disappointment with the Victorian Planning Authority’s plans that will see most of the market demolished and rebuilt, Darebin City Council has released an alternative proposed plan that would protect the aspects of Preston Market our community loves, while allowing for new development in the precinct.
If implemented, this plan would protect the historical, cultural and social value of the market itself, and ensure any development in the precinct is well designed.
It doesn’t have to be one or the other – we can protect the market our community knows and loves while making room for new development.
We will submit our alternative plan to the Standing Advisory Committee at the upcoming hearings (3 October – 9 November) and ask the Victorian Planning Authority and Planning Minister to endorse it.
Features of our proposed plan are:
- The current heritage market is retained and upgraded - with the same traders and spaces the community knows and loves
- The same number of new apartments and commercial floorspace as in the VPA’s plan are provided around the market, at a scale appropriate for this central location
- More affordable housing
- New office and retail space
- Building heights responsive to the location
- More quality public open spaces
- Pedestrian and cycling connectivity through the site
- Car parking is accommodated in basements to the north and south of the market.
- Creative industries and commercial cultural facilities (such as cinemas and art galleries) encouraged
- Continued servicing of the market is provided throughout redevelopment stages
