FLASHING LEDS ADDED TO IMPROVE VISIBILITY OF SECOND CAMERA FROM ROADWAY

This update is for Sunday, June 26. By 5:57 AM, I was in the crosswalk to check on the moveable signs and barriers again. Yesterday morning they were all moved off the roadway and since nobody seems to be in charge of putting them back when an event is over, I do it. Today, all was well with the signs and barrier in our crosswalk even though I could see that NY Road Runners had placed plastic delineators along the middle of the roadway, indicating that a run was happening in the roadway later today.

I decided to inspect the south loop to see if the CPC Park Bicycle Rules posters I placed on most of the 20 traffic signal boxes yesterday were still intact and to find out from the NYRR crew if they planned to remove the signs and barrier in our crosswalk off the roadway today. By the time I got to the crosswalk between Heckscher Playground and Wollman Rink, I found them stringing red plastic tape from delineator to delineator along the center of the roadway. The supervisor told me there were no plans to clear the roadway at our crosswalk as there were only 100 runners or so in this race. I asked him who would be in charge of replacing signs if they had removed them from the roadway and he said it would be RRNY.

The CPC Park Bicycle Rules posters were all intact and in good condition by the time I completed the walk around the loop. I left and returned at 9:40 AM and shot clips until 9:53. It was sunny and getting hot again. The volume of traffic was lighter today than yesterday so I packed up and returned again at 1:16 PM with the second camera setup which I placed downstream of our crosswalk on a rocky knoll in the grass behind the hot dog vendor. There were light gusts of wind and I feared the tripod would get blown over and crash the camera, so I wedged the heavy power bank between the struts of the tripod to give it weight and noticed that I could turn on the flashing LEDs on the power bank and point them at the roadway to alert traffic to the fact they were being filmed. This also makes it easier to locate the downstream camera in the footage shot from my hand-held camera in the crosswalk.

At 2:30 PM, a CPC golf cart dove from the roadway into the crosswalk between pedestrians, while the stoplight was red and the safe-to-cross light was white, and proceeded up the path to the 63rd Street entrance to service the garbage cans, all the way tailgating pedestrians in front of him. The second camera angle really documents this incident very well in combination with the hand-held camera and these were all later forwarded to Roger Mosier who, without a doubt, will follow thru.

Today's screengrab is a bicycle swerving between pedestrians to avoid a slower bike while breaching the crosswalk on red while the stoplight is red, the safe-to-cross light is white and 7 pedestrians are in the crosswalk.
