My name is Koliani Laie. I’m 14 years old, and my dad is a U.S. Air Force veteran who nearly took his own life—twice—because of how badly he was treated during serving. 

He was placed in a role that triggered his lifelong stutter, faced crushing anxiety every day, and was hospitalized after two suicide attempts. His story is not rare.

Veterans are 50% more likely to become homeless, and many suffer from PTSD, depression, and untreated mental health issues. They return from service only to be ignored by the very system they served.

We need to do better.

I’m calling on Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs to:

• Fund faster, better access to VA mental health services
• Hold the VA accountable for neglect and delays
• Expand housing support to prevent veteran homelessness
• Provide long-term family support programs
• Publicly commit to more than just Veterans Day speeches — show it in policy

I may be young, but I know wrong when I see it. This country was built by people who served. It’s time we serve them back.
