Protect Our Community: Limit Gun Shops in Westford
The Issue
As concerned residents of Westford, Massachusetts, we are writing this petition to address the urgent need for common sense zoning bylaws and oversight regarding gun shops in our town. The recent events in Littleton, where over 80 dealers were shut down for abusing the system, and because Littleton had no by laws have raised serious concerns about the potential negative impact of such establishments on our community. We must take proactive measures to ensure that what happened in Littleton does not happen here in Westford.
This issue is deeply personal to us and many others in our town. We have survivors of gun violence who continue to bear the physical and emotional scars caused by these tragic incidents. Our children deserve a safe environment where they can grow and thrive without fear of gun-related incidents near their homes or schools.
Statistics consistently demonstrate that an increase in gun shops correlates with decreased safety within communities. In fact, studies have shown that areas with higher concentrations of firearm retailers experience higher rates of violent crime and unintentional shootings (source: Journal of Urban Health). It is alarming to note that gun violence has now become the NUMBER ONE killer of children, highlighting the urgency for bylaws.
Furthermore, Littleton had one of the largest conglomeration of licensed gun dealers in the entire United States. Some dealers were found skirting Massachusetts' strict gun laws, raising concerns about proper oversight and regulation within this industry.
To protect our community from potential harm caused by an excessive number of gun shops, we propose implementing a store maximum limit within Westford. By doing so, we can ensure responsible distribution while maintaining public safety as our top priority.
