The Issue

This petition is written from the perspective of a mother who has experienced firsthand the devastating consequences of the lack of restrictions and regulation surrounding e-bikes. This past summer my young son was struck by a minor riding an illegal, modified e-bike on our residential street. At just three years old, my son nearly lost his life. Thankfully, he survived, but the incident was terrifying and showed just how unsafe our streets can be for children and pedestrians.

The severity of the accident has led to criminal charges. This case highlights the seriousness of e-bikes and how unregulated access can put children and families at grave risk.

E-bikes can travel at high speeds and carry significant force, yet riders are not required to have insurance, register their bikes, or meet minimum safety standards.

We are not against e-bikes—they are a useful and eco-friendly form of transportation—but children and pedestrians deserve reasonable protections, including stronger rules about who can purchase these bikes and how they are accessed.

By signing this petition, you are helping prevent serious injuries and sending a clear message to lawmakers: we need stronger e-bike safety laws in Ontario.

Policy Requests / What We Are Asking For:

    •    Mandatory liability insurance for all e-bike riders

    •    Registration or visible identification for e-bikes

    •    Clear age enforcement so children under 16 cannot ride electric powered bikes.

    •    Regulations on purchase and accessibility to prevent minors from obtaining e-bikes

    •    Mandatory education and licensing for all riders

    •    Stricter local enforcement and public awareness regarding sidewalk and residential street safety

    •    Review of speed limits and power restrictions to prevent illegal, modified bikes from endangering the public

No parent should have to fear for their child’s life because current laws haven’t kept up with the realities of high-speed e-bikes. Sign this petition today to help make Ontario streets safer for all children and families.
