On Monday, May 29th, 2023, the York Catholic District School Board will make a decision on whether to officially acknowledge their students who have asked the board to show support for marginalized students by raising the Pride flag, showing unequivocally that they are welcome and safe place for their 2SLGBTQI+ students, staff and community members.

Raising the Pride flag at schools can help traditionally marginalized students, staff, and community members feel a sense of safety and belonging for several reasons:

Visibility and Representation: Raising the Pride flag is a visible symbol that represents and acknowledges the presence of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals in the community. It signals to students, staff, and community members that they are all seen, valued, and supported. This visibility can have a powerful impact, as it helps combat feelings of isolation and invisibility that many 2SLGBTQI+ individuals may experience.

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment: Displaying the Pride flag signals that the school is a safe and inclusive space for all individuals, regardless of their background or identity. It sends a message that discrimination, bullying, and harassment will not be tolerated. This can contribute to a more accepting and supportive school climate, where 2SLGBTQI+ students and staff feel comfortable being their authentic selves.

Promoting Acceptance and Understanding: Raising the Pride flag can serve as an educational opportunity for all students and staff. It helps foster conversations about diversity, acceptance, and respect for different families, identities and experiences. By promoting understanding and empathy, it can contribute to a school culture that values and celebrates diversity in all its forms.

Allyship and Community Support: Raising the Pride flag demonstrates support for all community members, and can encourage allies to speak up and show solidarity. It helps create a sense of community and encourages individuals to be supportive allies to 2SLGBTQI+ people, contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate school environment.

Mental Health and Well-being: Feeling a sense of safety and belonging is crucial for the mental health and well-being of all students and staff. For 2SLGBTQI+ individuals who may face higher rates of mental health challenges due to societal stigma and discrimination, a supportive school environment can be particularly important. Raising the Pride flag can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and isolation, ultimately promoting better mental health outcomes for 2SLGBTQI+ students, staff and their allies.

Raising the Pride flag is a positive step, but it needs to be accompanied by other inclusive practices, such as implementing comprehensive anti-bullying policies, providing the community with 2SLGBTQI+ education and resources.

Please let YCDSB trustees know that you are in support of beginning the process towards fostering a culture of acceptance and respect for all.

Thank you for staying engaged during this critical time, when the 2SLGBTQI+ community is witnessing so much hateful rhetoric with extremists trying to roll back basic protections and inclusive policies. The extra support right now is much needed.
