The Issue

Thousands of families in Omid Sabz Township, Kabul, Afghanistan, are facing uncertainty over homes and properties they purchased in good faith, relying on ownership documents, previous court decisions, and government approvals.

Following a recent ruling declaring approximately 1,507.49 jeribs of township land to be state property, residents face the risk of losing homes and property rights they have relied upon for years.

According to published media reports, some residents have been pressured to leave their homes, while others have reportedly been asked to pay rent to remain in houses they already purchased or built with their own savings.

Families should not be forced to become tenants in their own homes or pay a second time for properties they purchased in good faith.

Residents who gathered peacefully to protest the situation have also reportedly faced threats of gunfire. Community representatives have reportedly been detained. These allegations raise serious concerns about the safety of residents and their ability to seek justice without intimidation.

This is more than a land ownership dispute. It is a serious housing and human rights concern affecting families, children, elderly residents, and people who have invested their life savings in their homes.

We urgently call for:

An immediate halt to forced evictions, home seizures, and coercive rent demands until the dispute receives a fair and independent review.
Protection against intimidation and retaliation, including threats of violence and detention for peaceful protests.
A transparent review of previous court decisions, ownership documents, purchase agreements, and government approvals.
Protection of good-faith purchasers, without requiring families to pay again for property they already purchased.
A fair and lawful resolution that protects families from homelessness and provides effective remedies for any established violations.
We call on the United Nations, international human rights organizations, and all relevant authorities to urgently address this situation and help protect affected families.

No family should face homelessness, intimidation, or demands to pay rent in a home they purchased and believed they legally owned.
