The Issue

Protecting oceans and animal life from pollution is a critical environmental issue because pollution continues to severely damage marine ecosystems around the world. Every year, about 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the oceans, and scientists predict that this number could nearly triple by 2040 if action is not taken. Around 80% of ocean pollution comes from land-based sources such as littering, industrial waste, and stormwater runoff. Plastic pollution is especially dangerous because it does not easily break down and can remain in the ocean for hundreds of years. As plastics slowly break apart into microplastics, they are consumed by fish and other marine animals, eventually entering the human food chain as well.

Marine animals are heavily affected by pollution. Studies estimate that over 100,000 marine mammals, including dolphins, whales, and seals, die each year from entanglement in plastic or fishing gear. In addition, approximately 1 million seabirds die

annually after ingesting plastic debris mistaken for food. Researchers have also found that nearly 90% of seabirds worldwide have plastic in their stomachs. Sea turtles are another species greatly impacted, with more than 50% of sea turtles having consumed plastic at some point in their lives. Oil spills and chemical pollution further harm marine ecosystems by poisoning water, damaging habitats, and reducing oxygen levels needed for aquatic life to survive.

Ocean pollution also affects coral reefs and overall biodiversity. Coral reefs support nearly 25% of all marine species, yet about 50% of coral reefs have already been damaged or destroyed due to pollution, climate change, and harmful human activities. Polluted oceans can also negatively impact humans by reducing seafood supplies, harming tourism industries, and threatening the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on fishing and marine resources. Protecting oceans requires stronger recycling efforts, reducing single-use plastics, improving waste disposal systems, and supporting conservation programs. Small actions, such as using reusable products and participating in beach cleanups, can help reduce pollution and protect marine life for future generations.
