Advocate and Provide Education on Licensed Therapy Practices
The Issue
As a specialist in pediatric occupational therapy, I have dedicated my life to professionally and ethically treating the children in my care. It's become increasingly disturbing to witness the growing trend of individuals and clinics who are utilizing therapy techniques from multiple practices, with no training. The concern isn't merely the lack of education and skill these clinics provide, it's also about the staggering fees they charge these desperate families seeking help for their children.
Unregulated and untrained, they fly under the radar and deny the children authentic, professional care they need and deserve. Based on a report by the American Occupational Therapy Association in 2020, there are more than 213,000 licensed Occupational Therapists in the United States, who have fulfilled rigorous training and licensing requirements to ensure safe and effective therapy.
Educators, parents, physicians, etc. need to be better informed about how these clinics differ from therapy practices provided by a licensed professional. As therapists we need to work together to educate our communities as a whole. This is essential in protecting the wellbeing of the children and adults who depend on our services. Please spread the word and advocate for improved
