In 2023, Strathfield Council attempted to privatise Not-for-Profit services, Strathfield One Stop Childcare Service (SOCCS), Integricare Preschool Strathfield (Bates Street) and Homebush Out of School Hours Care (HOOSH) . Community action stopped it, but the threat is not over.

Now, Strathfield Council are again pressuring these services through exorbitant rent increases on community-owned land. Such hikes force not-for-profit providers into impossible choices: drastically raise fees, cut quality, or shut down. This directly undermines affordable, safe, high-quality care that families depend on, amidst the cost-of-living crisis.

We are currently facing a troubling wave of high-profile child abuse cases, many in private, for-profit childcare centres. The loss or weakening of not-for-profit centres leaves families with far fewer affordable, trustworthy options, as commercial providers prioritise profits over families and vulnerable children.

Services like SOCCS and HOOSH need to be replicated. They should not be commercialised, privatised or treated as a disposable asset.
