Protect North Carolina Votes: Stop Jefferson Griffin's Attacks on Democracy

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the North Carolina State Board of Elections to uphold the integrity of the democratic process and reject the frivolous and baseless protests filed by Republican Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin, who is challenging over 60,000 legally cast votes in the 2024 election.

Justice Allison Riggs, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina Supreme Court, has won the election by 625 votes according to hand-recounted results certified by local elections boards. However, Griffin's protests seek to overturn the will of the people and undermine our democracy by casting doubt on ballots that were legally cast and counted under the law.

Griffin’s Dangerous Efforts to Overturn Democracy
Griffin’s protests target over 60,000 ballots with claims that have been repeatedly dismissed in federal and state courts. His actions not only attack legally cast votes but also disrupt the foundational principles of democracy. Among his unfounded and discriminatory challenges are:

  • Baseless Targeting of Military Families and Overseas Voters:
Griffin has attempted to disqualify ballots cast under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) and the Uniform Military and Overseas Voters Act (UMOVA). These bipartisan federal and state laws, enacted to ensure that service members and their families can vote while stationed abroad, have been a pillar of voting access for decades. His protests disregard the sacrifices of military families and undermine their right to participate in democracy.

  • Discrimination Against Voters with Administrative Issues:
Griffin seeks to disqualify voters whose registrations allegedly lack driver’s license or Social Security numbers—claims that are explicitly addressed and permitted under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) through alternative documentation.

  • Absurd Claims About Deceased Voters:
Griffin argues that ballots should be invalidated if voters passed away after casting their ballots, an extreme and legally baseless position that disregards voter intent and humanity.

  • Attacks on the Rights of Everyday North Carolinians:
Among Griffin’s targets are Justice Allison Riggs’ own parents who are lifelong voters and regular voters in NC since retiring to the state following her father's 30 year service in the U.S. military as a combat veteran. This shows the extreme and frivolous lengths Griffin is willing to go to subvert the will of voters.

These challenges have already been dismissed in part by a federal court in October and echo a broader Republican strategy to purge voter rolls and suppress votes through intimidation and misinformation. Griffin’s actions not only threaten the rights of 60,000 voters but also waste taxpayer funded resources and disrupt trust in our election system.

The Broader Threat
These challenges are part of a larger Republican strategy to suppress votes, purge voter rolls, and sow doubt in elections. A Wake County Superior Court judge already found Griffin’s claims to be unsupported by evidence, stating that:

"Plaintiffs have not presented any evidence of even a single specific instance of any registrant unlawfully availing themselves of the statutory provision.”

Additionally, Griffin's protests waste taxpayer dollars, create chaos in election administration, and jeopardize trust in our electoral system. As the North Carolina State Board of Elections warned:

"If Plaintiffs prevail, their constitutional claim threatens to strip untold numbers of voters — including military service members serving outside the State — of their right to participate fully in our State’s elections.”

What’s at Stake?
These protests are not just about one election—they are about the fundamental right to vote and have that vote counted. The majority of voters impacted by these challenges are law-abiding citizens who cast their ballots in good faith. Among those affected are Justice Riggs’ own parents, who are targeted under a pretext of incomplete voter registration.

North Carolina law, including the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), ensures that voters are not disenfranchised due to administrative errors or minor registration issues. Yet Griffin’s campaign seeks to undermine these protections to serve a partisan agenda.

We Demand Action
We urge the North Carolina State Board of Elections to:

  1. Uphold the results of the 2024 Supreme Court election as certified by local boards and verified through recounts.

  2. Reject Griffin's baseless protests and defend the voting rights of citizens in Vance, Granville, and across North Carolina.

  3. Hold Griffin accountable for sowing chaos and distrust in our elections through frivolous legal challenges.

Our Democracy Depends on We The People
Every voter deserves to have their voice heard and respected. This attempt to overturn the will of the people through intimidation and manipulation is an attack on our democracy. We stand together to demand that the State Board of Elections protect the voters of North Carolina and affirm Justice Allison Riggs’ victory.
