⚡ Update: MUSD is now admitting what the community suspected all along ⚡
Thank you again to everyone who has stayed engaged by signing, sharing, and showing up to speak.
The district has now rolled out a flurry of scenarios for the future of MUSD elementary schools — from no closures to closing Palm Vista, Landers, and Morongo Valley.
Do not let that distract from the bigger fact.
The bigger fact is this:
The district reportedly acknowledged that it has no records showing any timeline for the “alternative solutions” work referenced in the School Leaders contract.
That is not a small detail.
That is a major admission.
Because if there are no records showing when alternatives were supposed to be developed, presented, and evaluated, then the public has every reason to ask whether those alternatives were ever seriously planned at all.
In other words, while families were being told closures were “under discussion” and “hard, but necessary,” the district still cannot show a documented alternatives process behind one of the most consequential decisions it can make.
That should alarm every parent, staff member, resident, and taxpayer in the Morongo Basin.
At the same time, the public still has not been shown:
- Clear budget math
- Real site-by-site savings
- Transportation and staffing costs created by each scenario
- The full impact on children, families, and school communities
This demonstrative late burst of options on paper does not fix the underlying problem.
It confirms that this process has been reactive, sloppy, and shaped under public pressure rather than built on transparent planning from the start.
And while this is happening, families are being asked to absorb the cost:
- Longer routes
- Larger campuses
- Lost neighborhood schools
- Disruption for children
- Strain on staff, services, and parents
Meanwhile, the harder questions about administrative spending and district priorities at the top still remain protected.
Parents have also sought outside guidance, including from Mike Fine, CEO of California’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team, which advises school districts. Fine reportedly said it was not necessary to close any schools in MUSD. Based on those conversations, many in the community do not believe MUSD is in a position where school closures are the only responsible or necessary path.
At the same time, California’s Attorney General has already warned districts that school closures, mergers, and consolidations carry serious legal, equity, and community-impact concerns, and must not move forward without meaningful public engagement and careful analysis.
That is why this moment matters.
Now is not the time to step back. Now is the time to show up in even greater numbers.
If the district never seriously planned alternatives, then the community must force those alternatives into the room.
If the district cannot show the math, then the public must demand it in public.
If they expect fatigue, they should get the opposite.
Come to the next meetings. Bring another parent. Bring a neighbor. Bring anyone who cares about public schools, public trust, and honest process.
