The Friends of McAllister Park is having their July picnic and membership meeting tomorrow, Sunday July 18 from 1pm - 3pm. With the development of the Mud Creek issue, this meeting will be primarily focused on providing information to the public about the paved greenway plans through Mud Creek Loop in McAllister Park. The public is invited to attend.
There are 97 miles of greenway developed or under construction in San Antonio. Eventually, there will be a greenway connection to Austin along the Great Springs Trail. This safe, sustainable connection is something we support and are very proud to have in our city, and now growing between two cities!
As these greenways grow, we also demand they grow with integrity to the communities, parks, and natural areas they develop through.
Mud Creek Loop in McAllister Park is the last undeveloped natural area in McAllister Park and serves thousands of people for its safe, shaded, dirt trails. We believe it is a place that deserves to be preserved in its natural state for the many people who use it now, and for future generations, to enjoy.
McAllister Park is also in desperate need of repairs and restoration to infrastructure and the natural habitat. We believe the greenway should commit funds to helping the park if it plans to develop through any area.
An alternate route has been suggested by some members of the board of the Friends of McAllister Park that would bypass the Mud Creek area via a CPS powerline easement through several communities.
This route would create the desired point A to point B connectivity for the greenway and preserve the last undeveloped natural area of the park. It would also give more points of direct access to approximately 2,400 neighboring households. Understandably, this route would need to have these communities' approval. We are hoping to start that conversation and work together towards a solution.
(See the Friends of McAllister Park Facebook for more info.)
Please join the meeting tomorrow.
