Petition updateProtect Legal Certainty in Swedish Citizenship ReformThis is About the Rule of Law: Not Just Citizenship Policy

The Swedish government is pushing forward a citizenship law that knowingly strips away transitional protections. Despite clear criticism from Lagrådet, they are choosing to apply new, harsher rules to people already in the system.

This is not a technical detail. It is a direct challenge to the rule of law.

People who followed every requirement, applied in good faith, and waited, in majority cases for years, are now being told that the goalposts will be moved against them. Not because they did anything wrong, but because the government has decided that fairness is optional.

Let’s be clear: Sweden has long stood for legal certainty and predictability. Changing rules retroactively breaks that tradition.

However, the resistance is growing.

Criticism is now coming from multiple directions. Legal authorities, including Lagrådet, have raised serious concerns. Political voices, including members of Centerpartiet and others, are questioning the fairness of changing the rules mid-process. Experts and civil society are warning that this risks undermining trust in public institutions.

This is no longer just about citizenship policy. It is about what kind of country Sweden chooses to be.

A country where rules mean something, or a country where they can be rewritten at any time, at the expense of those who trusted the system.

I refuse to accept this and will continue to push, to speak, and to stand firm, until fairness is restored.

Because this is not just policy.

This is principle.

Thank you!
