Protect Lampung's forests and wildlife (Way Kambas)

Masalahnya

Lampung, located on the southern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia, is grappling with severe deforestation issues that are threatening its rich biodiversity and iconic wildlife. This beautiful province, known for its lush forests and diverse fauna, is at a critical juncture where immediate action is needed to preserve its natural heritage.

A recent study has identified rampant deforestation activities in Lampung, driven by illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development. These activities are not only depleting the province's green cover but also threatening the habitats of numerous wildlife species that are unique to this region.

Crucial among these threatened animals are those living in Taman Nasional Way Kambas, a national park renowned for its conservation efforts. This park is a sanctuary for several endangered species, including Sumatran elephants, rhinos, and tigers. Way Kambas plays an essential role in the conservation of these animals by providing a protected area where they can thrive. However, the encroachment of deforestation is posing a significant risk to their existence.

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15), which focuses on life on land, stresses the importance of protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests sustainably, and halting and reversing land degradation. This is closely aligned with Lampung's provincial regulations aimed at conservation. Unfortunately, despite the presence of these regulations, gaps in enforcement and implementation are hindering effective conservation outcomes.

Field data collected from extensive visits to Way Kambas indicate that while the park's efforts are commendable, they alone are not sufficient. There needs to be a collaborative approach involving policymakers, local communities, and international organizations to ensure a sustainable impact. Targeted actions such as strengthening law enforcement, promoting community-based forest management, and enhancing public awareness about the importance of preserving Lampung's natural resources are critical.

We urge the local government of Lampung, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and other stakeholders to prioritize these concerns and take immediate, effective measures to combat deforestation and support wildlife conservation. It is imperative to ensure that the current regulations are not only enforced but also enhanced to provide real and lasting protection to the province’s invaluable ecosystems and wildlife.
