Caption ideas: LENA: VOTE NO / SAVE OUR CITY / RESTORE LOCAL CONTROL
We are turning up the heat on our state senator and tearing away the YIMBY mask. San Francisco YIMBY-backed State Sen. Scott Weiner's SB 79 is one more effort to strip away local control. If passed, large apartment complexes can be built without city input or approval near "major or proposed transit centers." The definition of "major transit centers" keeps changing and amendments are flying to try to counter another attempt to override local control over what gets built in our city. We cannot take the chance that at the last minute a transit center simply becomes a bus stop. Besides, shouldn't local officials and city planners be involved in projects that size?
Our Neighborhood Voices is coordinating protest rallies in cities across California to raise awareness and support for a ballot measure (think Prop 13) that would roll back the laws that Weiner-and-friends pushed through four years ago and ensure that can't happen again. Those bills, like SB 9, are what is behind the ADUs that are popping up all over Lakewood and other communities. Hundreds of permits have been pulled in Lakewood alone. Imagine our streets crowded with cars -- it's already happened in some neighborhoods.
YIMBYs are not who you think they are. SB 9 did nothing to provide affordable housing. Has the value of your house dropped in four years? Are ADU rentals going for below-market rates? No!
Their biggest contributors are Zuckerberg, other "tech bros," corporations, and real estate interests looking to cash in on the "densifying" of suburban communities like Lakewood. Their arguments are false. Unfortunately, our own State Senator Lena Gonzalez fell for it four years ago when she voted for SB 9. She has the opportunity right now to show she has seen the light by voting NO on SB 79.
PLEASE come out and show your support. PLEASE sign up on the Our Neighborhood Voices website and donate. Ballot measures are expensive -- they have to raise MILLIONS to gather the signatures to just qualify for the ballot and then millions more to run a campaign.
