Protect Lakeland Residents from Harassment at Local Events

Protect Lakeland Residents from Harassment at Local Events
The Issue
On May 17th, 2025, my 16-year-old son and his girlfriend were simply enjoying their day at Lakeland's farmers market, an event I believed to be a safe space for them. This and all events the LDDA provide are family friendly and enhance the community as a whole. I did not send my son to a political event, I sent him to enjoy local vendors and support small business. However, without my consent, they were unwittingly exposed to the reckless attempts to provoke other attendees by Kaitlin Bennett, a self-described journalist known for provocative and confrontational tactics. This incident has made me uncomfortable and concerned for the safety and privacy of everyone who visits these local events.
In Lakeland, FL, unsuspecting vendors and residents at the farmers market and other events organized by the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) have been subjected to unwarranted filming and interrogation by social media personalities. These individuals, including Kaitlin Bennett, often infringe upon the personal rights of attendees by creating a spectacle for their own profit. These confrontations are not just intrusive; they can potentially escalate into violence, as seen in various videos published by these personalities.
Julie Townsend, alongside the Lakeland Police Department (LPD), has been striving to protect the rights of those visiting these community events. They acknowledge the residents' fundamental right to enjoy these spaces without being involuntarily thrust into the limelight or intimidation tactics used under the guise of "protected speech."
We must support Julie Townsend and the LDDA in their efforts to enforce policies that safeguard our community's right to privacy and consent. Establishing protocols that require explicit permission for interviews and video recordings at public events is essential. Furthermore, having a clear and enforceable policy against harassment will help ensure these spaces remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
By signing this petition, you will stand with the Lakeland community in defending our right to privacy and safety. Together, we can urge the authorities to uphold our rights and prevent these unnecessary and potentially harmful invasions of personal space. Please sign this petition to show your support for a respectful and secure environment at all LDDA events.
For context here is an article from the Lakeland Ledger updating us on what is happening because a YouTube personality was asked to move over to the sidewalk to conduct interviews so that vendors and shoppers could enjoy their experiences without being involuntarily subjected to filming and other risks associated with the type of content being produced. It is worth noting that Ms. Bennett has a security detail to protect her when she films.
