The Issue

Too many Kenyan children have died in school fires that should never have happened.

Dormitories with no alarms. Windows sealed with permanent bars. Single exits that cannot be opened quickly in an emergency. Inadequate fire safety standards and poor emergency preparedness continue to put children at risk.

We are calling on the President, Parliament, the Ministry of Education, county governments, school boards, engineers, architects, and regulators to act now.

We demand the following 10 reforms:

  1. Mandatory annual fire safety inspections for all schools
  2. Smoke detection and fire alarm systems in all school buildings
  3. Emergency exit doors with panic-bar hardware
  4. Reform of window security designs that trap occupants during emergencies
  5. Multiple evacuation routes for all dormitories
  6. Mandatory fire drills every academic term
  7. Risk-based fire sprinkler requirements
  8. Public disclosure of school safety ratings
  9. A national school retrofitting program
  10. A dedicated National School Life-Safety Code

Other nations have reduced school fire deaths through better standards, stronger enforcement, and safer building design. Kenya can do the same.

No parent should send a child to school and never see them return home.

No family should bury a child because a school was not safe enough.
