Protect Keele & Wilson Families: Stop the Unsafe Shelter Plan

The Issue

Our children are not safe at Keele and Wilson.

Every day, families in this neighbourhood are forced to witness unsafe and indecent conditions right outside their homes. Parents walk their children past bushes where people are urinating and defecating in the open. They see individuals intoxicated and drinking publicly, often loitering in schoolyards as kids are being dropped off at daycare and school. Residents are reporting thefts, assaults, and threatening behaviour in the very spaces where our children should feel secure.

This is not a rare occurrence. It is our daily reality, and the City of Toronto has failed to act. Despite repeated pleas for enforcement of laws around public intoxication, indecency, and loitering, nothing is being done to protect families here.

Now, the City has approved a homeless shelter directly beside homes and a daycare centre at Keele and Wilson. If the City cannot enforce safety today, when the problem is smaller, how will they protect us when the problem grows larger? Without guarantees of police patrols, on-site security, and a clear plan for accountability, this decision will make an already dangerous situation even worse.

What makes this even more outrageous is the fact that year after year, our property taxes go up. Families here work hard to afford homes and contribute more and more to City revenues, yet we have no voice in what happens in our neighbourhood and no protection for our safety. What the City is doing is not only unfair — it is a shameful abuse of authority and a blatant disregard for the families and taxpayers who keep the City running.

MPP Roman Baber has already raised his voice strongly against this plan on behalf of families in our neighbourhood. He has been dismissed outright by City officials, showing how little regard they have for residents who actually live here. But that does not mean this fight is over. It means now, more than ever, we must stand together and make it impossible for them to ignore us.

This is our chance to act. The shelter has been approved, but we can still influence what happens next. With enough signatures, we can force the City to put safety and accountability first. Families deserve protection. Children deserve safe schools. Residents deserve a City that listens.

By signing this petition, you are joining your neighbours in saying: we will not be ignored, we will hold the City accountable, and we refuse to let our community be dismissed any longer. Together, we can make a difference.
