Protect Irvine's Great Park: Oppose the Cemetery at ARDA Site
The Issue
We, the residents of Irvine, hold our veterans in the highest regard, cherishing their sacrifices with all our hearts. Yet, the proposed active cemetery at the ARDA site in Great Park strikes a painful chord, looming next to Cadence Park School where young children learn and play. Imagine their innocent days disrupted by funeral processions and 21-gun salutes, a constant shadow of loss. This affects families across the neighborhood, Asian residents concerned about feng shui, and every citizen who treasures Great Park’s vibrant spirit, threatening the community’s very soul.
If the ARDA site cemetery proceeds, the laughter of children and the warmth of our neighborhood hang in the balance. Picture joyful parks and homes overshadowed by graves, with traffic from visitors clogging streets and the somber sounds of mourning filling the air. All of this is avoidable. We don't need an additional municipal cemetery. We can put our tax money to better use. By rallying for Gypsum Canyon—a serene, spacious site backed by 33 Orange County cities, state leaders, and veterans groups—we can honor our heroes without breaking the community’s heart. With the county’s $20 million commitment, Gypsum Canyon offers a viable path forward to create a true tribute.
With the Irvine City Council vote just four days away on May 27, 2025, the time to act is now. Every moment of delay leaves veterans waiting for the dignified resting place they deserve and edges our community closer to a decision that could scar Great Park forever. Immediate action can protect our neighborhood’s spirit while ensuring a respectful memorial. Join us today by signing this petition to urge the Council to vote NO on the ARDA site and YES to Gypsum Canyon—let’s honor our heroes and preserve our home!
