Protect Houses of Worship with a Federal Buffer Zone
The Issue
Establish a Federal 100-Foot Buffer Zone to Protect Access to Houses of Worship
To President Donald J. Trump, Members of Congress, and State Leaders Across the United States:
In recent years , houses of worship—particularly Jewish synagogues—have faced escalating incidents of targeted harassment, intimidation, and blocked entrances by organized groups. They have also faced repeated vandalism. The targeting of Houses of worship of all faiths have risen sharply and cannot be tolerated. These actions do not constitute peaceful protest; they are direct interference with the religious freedom and safety of American citizens.
Jews remain the group experiencing the highest rate of faith-based hate crimes in the United States. Despite this, current laws do not adequately protect worshippers from groups that block entrances or create unsafe conditions around religious institutions.
We, the undersigned, call for the immediate creation of a federal buffer zone around houses of worship. This measure would prevent demonstrations from occurring within a reasonable and clearly defined distance—for example, within 100 feet of the entrance.
This policy is constitutional and consistent with long-standing First Amendment doctrine. The Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld time, place, and manner restrictions when speech infringes on the rights or safety of others. Blocking access to a synagogue, mosque, church, or temple is not protected speech. It violates the religious liberty and civil rights of those seeking to enter and pray
We therefore petition for:
A federal standard establishing a minimum buffer zone (e.g., 100 feet) around all houses of worship.
Enforcement mechanisms to ensure that entrances remain unobstructed at all times.
Equal protection for all faith communities under this policy.
Our goal is simple: to protect the right of every American to worship freely, safely, and without intimidation
We urge federal and state leaders to act swiftly.
This is not a partisan issue — it is a civil rights and safety issue that transcends politics.
Sign this petition to demand the immediate protection of our nation’s houses of worship.
