Protect Homeschooled Children: Demand a Ban on Convicted Child Abusers Homeschooling
In all but 4 states it's perfectly legal for convicted child abusers and convicted pedophiles to withdraw a child from school and homeschool. It's time to stand up for children who are hidden from view, silenced behind closed doors under the guise of homeschooling. Across the country, there have been horrific cases where children were tortured and ultimately killed by their guardians—individuals who used homeschooling to isolate them from teachers and doctors. Children like Isaiah Torres who was beaten, starved, raped and tortured for years before finally being murdered by being sodomized with a stick. Or, Adrian Jones, whose emaciated body was found after years of starvation and abuse, and Nixzmary Brown, a homeschooled child brutally murdered after enduring chronic neglect, remind us that without oversight, homeschooling can become a shield for abusers. These children were withdrawn from school after reports of abuse by the school. We are calling on policymakers to enact a federal or state-level ban on individuals with child abuse convictions from homeschooling or residing in a homeschool household. No child should suffer or die because we failed to act. Sign this petition to demand common-sense protections for some of the most vulnerable among us.
