Protect Holmes Childcare Center: Reconsider Hargraves HVAC Repairs
The Issue
We, the community, strongly request that the city of Chapel Hill reconsider its decision to proceed with HVAC repairs at the Hargraves Community Center as currently planned. This poorly timed action, announced with minimal notice, threatens to displace the children of Holmes Childcare—a vital and beloved community resource—for an unacceptable 90 days.
Holmes Childcare is far more than just a childcare facility. For decades, it has been a trusted anchor for countless families, providing compassionate, high-quality care in a nurturing environment. The educators at Holmes are exceptional—highly skilled, deeply dedicated, and unwavering in their support of the children and families they serve. Their impact is immeasurable, and their work is integral to the fabric of our community.
The planned repairs will cause unnecessary and disruptive upheaval to the children, families, and educators who rely on Holmes daily. While we recognize the importance of maintaining and upgrading infrastructure, this project as proposed disregards the needs of the very people it is meant to serve. A project of this magnitude must be planned with careful consideration to avoid such harmful consequences.
We respectfully ask that the city take immediate action to address this issue. Whether by rescheduling the repairs, revising the scope, or exploring alternative solutions, the city must prioritize minimizing disruption to the children, families, and staff who depend on Holmes. Stability for our youngest residents cannot and should not be compromised.
This is a matter of community integrity and shared responsibility. We call on the city of Chapel Hill to act swiftly and thoughtfully to ensure that Holmes Childcare can continue its vital work without interruption.
