The opening of trophy hunting season in the Great Bear Rainforest has started and continues into June. This year, the BC Liberals have even extended the spring and fall grizzly bear hunts.
Please consider sharing and signing our online petition by April 18th as we team up with Humane Society International, Lush Cosmetics North America, Wildlife Defence League and more, to deliver it in person to make sure our efforts have been heard: https://www.change.org/p/protect-grizzly-bears-by-banning-t…
After years of losing public trust and bears slaughtered for sport despite widespread opposition, how can the Liberals continue to justify allowing the trophy hunt in the rest of the province, accepting large donations from trophy hunters, and running a trophy hunting guide as a candidate? “Election time is obviously when people make a lot of promises. Obviously, we’re not going anywhere. We’re committed to ending it," said Doug Neasloss, chief of the Kitasoo/Xaixais band council in Klemtu, to Postmedia News.
In the spring hunt female bears are often shot due to mistaken identity leaving their cubs to perish, and in the fall female grizzlies may be pregnant when they are hunted. Grizzly bears have the second lowest reproduction rate of North American land mammals. Economically, BC’s grizzly bear trophy hunt threatens the growing and sustainable wildlife-based tourism industry. Eco-tourism and bear viewing attract thousands of people to BC every year and create sustainable employment. There is simply no scientific, ethical or economic rationale for the trophy hunt.
