Gróandi is more than just a garden. It is a community-driven project where healthy food is grown, people learn about sustainable living, and biodiversity is nurtured. For nearly a decade, Gróandi has offered education, permaculture courses, and open harvests for locals and visitors alike. Watch a short story of this beautiful project here.

Now this unique place is under threat. The municipality of Ísafjörður plans to build a cable car for tourists on the land where Gróandi is located. If this goes ahead, the garden and everything it represents will be destroyed.

We believe there is room for compromise. The gondola project does not have to come at the cost of destroying Gróandi. The area where the garden is located could easily be excluded from the construction site, while still leaving plenty of space for the gondola (check photos below). This way, Ísafjörður can benefit from new tourism infrastructure without sacrificing an established community project that promotes sustainability and food security.

 

 

We, the undersigned, call on the town of Ísafjörður to protect Gróandi, recognize its value to the community, and discuss alternatives for the gondola project.

Gróandi must not be sacrificed for short-term tourism development!
