Protect Ferdy’s Haven for healing and recovery

Protect Ferdy’s Haven for healing and recovery
The issue
Ferdy's Haven, a cornerstone of the Palm Island community, plays an integral role in the healing and recovery of our people. It has stood for years as a sanctuary dedicated to providing support for the many individuals who seek solace and rehabilitation. However, recent talks suggest that there might be changes that could potentially alter its original purpose and function.
Our community has long relied on Ferdy's Haven not only as a refuge but as a critical facility that aligns with our cultural values and needs for recovery and healing. Health programs and support systems at Ferdy’s are indispensable, especially in a community that faces unique challenges requiring culturally sensitive care and understanding.
Statistics show that culturally tailored support programs significantly improve recovery outcomes in Aboriginal communities. More than ever, it is essential to preserve these types of facilities to foster healing and deliver much-needed services to vulnerable community members. Aboriginal health programs that incorporate cultural teachings and community involvement are up to three times more effective than generic programs.
As members of the Palm Island community, we urge the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council to commit to maintaining Ferdy's Haven in its original form. We propose that any changes to the facility be put to a community consultation to ensure transparency and consideration of local perspectives. This way, any decisions made align with the best interests of the community.
Through this petition, we ask for your support to ensure Ferdy's Haven continues to operate as a sanctuary for healing, recovery, and community support. Sign this petition and join us in preserving a vital part of our community's heart and spirit.
