The Issue

I keep coming back to the same question: are they lowering the cost of these diplomas, or are they lowering the financial aid students receive? Because those are not the same thing, and acting like they are is exactly where this whole conversation falls apart. What I am seeing is support being pulled away from degree paths that people love, rely on, and build their futures around, especially careers that are often women-dominated or dismissed as less valuable.

If a student hits a borrowing cap, that does not mean their tuition magically drops. If their parents make more than the amount that leaves them with no expected family contribution, but those parents still are not paying for the degree, that student is stuck. They go to the financial aid office, they are told they have reached their annual loan limit, and suddenly the message is: you can keep your dream, but only if you can afford it. That does not just affect one student. It affects future writers, theater workers, artists, and everyone who keeps creative and community spaces alive.

We need federal leaders to protect financial aid access for students pursuing creative and care-based degree programs instead of letting aid policies quietly push them out. Educational support cannot only exist for the degrees some people personally respect more or assume will make more money. If financial aid is truly about access, then it has to support students across fields, not rank their futures by gendered assumptions or earning stereotypes.

I am asking you to sign this petition if you believe education should not be reserved for the students whose degrees fit somebody else's idea of worth. Students deserve real access, real choice, and real support. Sign if you believe creative and care-based careers matter, and the people pursuing them do too.
