Elephants Teach Us to Take Up Space. Let’s Make Space for Them.

If you have ever seen an elephant in person, you know they take up space, not just physically.

They don’t apologize for being big. They are incredibly intelligent and sentient, form deep bonds with their families, grieve their losses, and move through the world fully as elephants.

In other words, they show up as their authentic selves.

Imagine what your life might look like if you did the same. If you stopped shrinking yourself or trying to become who you think others want you to be. What might happen if you showed up as your truest self?

Elephants remind us there is power in being exactly who we are.

And there is an even deeper lesson.

When elephants are free to simply be elephants, they don’t just enrich their own families and communities—they help sustain the living world around them.

As they travel across vast landscapes, elephants disperse seeds, create pathways, shape vegetation, and support countless other species. Their presence helps maintain the health and biodiversity of entire ecosystems.

They don’t set out to become “ecosystem engineers.” They simply live as elephants—and the world is better because they are in it.

Maybe there is something beautiful for us to remember in that, too: when we are fully ourselves, we each have something unique to contribute to the larger web of life.

This World Elephant Day, let elephants remind us not only of the importance of protecting this extraordinary species, but of the value of allowing all beings to live, belong, and fulfill their unique role on Earth.

Yet elephants continue to face habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and trophy hunting. Admiring them is not enough. We must also stand up for their right to exist, remain with their families, and live freely in the landscapes they call home.

Please turn your love for elephants into action by signing and sharing this petition calling for an end to the trophy hunting of endangered and threatened species.

The world is better because elephants are in it. Let’s make sure they remain part of it.
