Petition updateProtect endangered and threatened species from becoming targets of trophy hunting. The time is now to urge U.S. Congress to reinstate the ProTECT Act and ban trophy hunt imports!

The ProTECT Act known as The Prohibiting Threatened and Endangered Species Act prohibits the import of trophies of species listed in the Endangered Species Act.

Timing is crucial to get the ProTECT Act reintroduced.  As you may have heard, a lion named Mopane was recklessly killed in Zimbabwe by an American trophy hunter.  Like many other animals, lions are listed under the Endangered Species Act. Being endangered means a straight trajectory towards extinction if we all do not stand up for these animals now.

In order to prevent future trophy hunts, we need to ask our U.S. House of Representatives to urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to halt the import of trophies of endangered species and that we want the ProTECT Act to be reintroduced.

We also need to ask our U.S. Senators to support adding key language in the Senate version of the Fiscal Year 2022 Interior funding bill that prohibits the import of African lion and elephant trophies from Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Please call your U.S. Representative and Senators asking them to restrict the trophy hunting imports of lions and elephants!

Here is a script you can use when you contact your U.S. Representative:

“Hi, my name is <your name> and I am a voting constituent from <your city>. I’m calling to urge Representative ________ to end American trophy hunting of species listed under the Endangered Species Act. The recent death of Mopane, another important lion in Zimbabwe, for a trophy clearly demonstrates the need to codify the restrictions on importing trophies of lions and elephants from Zambia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe that the House passed in this year’s Department of Interior funding package.

I also urge Representative _____  to call upon Interior Secretary Haaland to halt the import of trophies of all species listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act and to follow the congressional directive to review the trophy permitting scheme. Finally, I strongly urge Representative ____  to support all relevant legislation to end the cruel practice of trophy hunting. Thank you.

Here is a script you can use when you contact your U.S. Senators:

“Hi, my name is <your name> and I am a voting constituent from <your city>. I’m calling to urge Senator ________ to end American trophy hunting of imperiled African lions and elephants. The recent death of Mopane, another important lion in Zimbabwe, for a trophy clearly demonstrates the urgent need to stop the import of lion trophies whose numbers are dwindling. Senator ______  can address this tragedy by supporting the current language in the House-passed FY22 Interior appropriations bill that would halt the import of lion and elephant trophies from Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. I strongly urge Senator ________ to fight to make sure this important language is also included in the Senate appropriations bill. Thank you.”

Please show your support for imperiled species today by calling your legislators and sharing this petition.
