The Issue

Boriken aka Puerto Rico is my beautiful home and El Yunque is its heart. El Yunque is also the cherished home of the coqui, that enchanting symbol of Puerto Rican nature. So much has already been taken from the Puerto Rican people, and with El Yunque being the only National Tropical Rain Forest that the USA has in Puerto Rico, it should never be allowed to be sold or developed.

The lands surrounding this breathtaking National Rainforest are under threat of being sold and developed, putting its delicate ecosystem in peril. Such intrusions could irreversibly damage the ecosystem, disturb water resources that countless rely on, and lead to the loss of habitats for the millions of creatures, including the endemic coquis that inhabit this magical space.

El Yunque hosts an incredible array of biodiversity. It’s a lifeline for many species that are found nowhere else on earth. The forest is home to approximately 240 species of trees, 150 types of ferns, and offers sanctuary to species like the Puerto Rican parrot, one of the ten most endangered birds in the world. Disrupting this region’s environment threatens not only these species but also the cultural and environmental heritage of Puerto Rico.

Developing this pristine area would lead to loss of vital forest cover, cause soil erosion, disrupt water cycles, and degrade water quality of streams and rivers fed by the forest. The rainforest plays a critical role in maintaining the island's climate and ensuring the health and well-being of our communities, animals, and plants alike.

We must act now to ensure El Yunque remains untouched by commercial interests. It's critical to lobby for enhanced government protection of these lands, ensuring enforcement of existing environmental laws and regulations that preserve the integrity of our natural sanctuaries.

Please join me in urging our decision-makers to protect El Yunque from being sold or developed. Sign this petition to show your support for preserving the enchanting beauty and ecological diversity of El Yunque for future generations.
