Protect Eagle Rock: Withhold BRT Permits Until Metro Shares Full Project Details
To: Councilmember Ysabel Jurado and the City of Los Angeles
We, the undersigned members of the Eagle Rock community, respectfully call on Councilmember Ysabel Jurado and the City of Los Angeles to withhold approval of permits for the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Eagle Rock until Metro provides complete, detailed information about the project and the community has a meaningful opportunity to review and respond.
We are deeply concerned that Metro appears to be nearing final permit approvals without adequately sharing essential details with the people who live, work, learn, worship, and operate businesses in Eagle Rock.
Our community deserves transparency and meaningful input before decisions are finalized—not after.
Why this matters
The BRT project will have lasting consequences for Eagle Rock, including:
- Traffic and congestion: How will the design affect traffic flow on our streets and surrounding roads?
- Emergency access and evacuation: How will the project affect access for fire engines, ambulances, and residents who may need to evacuate during a wildfire or other emergency?
- Local businesses and parking: What will happen to street parking, loading zones, customer access, and the businesses that help sustain our neighborhood?
- Street design and safety: What are the specific plans for bus lanes, medians, turn lanes, intersections, and other roadway changes?
- Community engagement: Why are residents being asked to accept decisions before Metro has adequately explained the details and addressed community concerns?
These are not minor questions. They affect our daily lives, our safety, our local economy, and the future of our neighborhood.
We respectfully ask Councilmember Jurado and the City of Los Angeles to:
- Withhold the relevant BRT permits until Metro provides complete and publicly accessible plans and project details.
- Schedule a transparent public presentation explaining the proposed route, ADA accessibility, lane configurations, medians, turn lane removals, parking removals, traffic circulation, and emergency access.
- Ensure meaningful community input before permits are approved, including an opportunity for residents, local businesses, parents, and other stakeholders to ask questions and receive substantive answers.
- Make community safety and neighborhood impacts a priority in evaluating the project and any proposed mitigation measures, i.e. speed humps or traffic cameras on sidestreets that will gain additional traffic
We support transparency, accountability, and a transportation planning process that respects the people who will live with the consequences. Decisions of this magnitude should not move forward without adequate information and meaningful public participation.
