Save Durham, NC's, natural forests!
The Issue
From 2000 to 2021, Durham lost 8.38kha of its relative tree cover; a whopping 100% decrease. This makes up 3.26Mt of CO₂e emissions, from Durham alone. Durham makes up for 0.43% of the global amount, showing us how much we are harming the Earth and our natural resources.
Between 2013 to 2021, 84% of Durham's tree cover loss occurred within its natural forests. From such a significant percentage, we add 1.06Mt of CO₂e to the evergrowing emissions.
Tree coverage is essential to our daily lives, along with animals. It protects us from harmful UV rays, helps us fight off premature death, and protects residents from pollution-related illnesses. Trees also help to reduce and block noise, air, and water pollution in bustling cities (such as Durham).
We can not allow ourselves to let tree coverage decrease at the rate it is going. If this continues, we will feel the harsh consequences. Surely we are all aware of the bipolar weather in Durham, let us keep what little shade we have left.
Protect our trees. Urge our local officials to step in and properly enforce the Durham County Forest Protection Program.
