Protect Digital Ownership & Repair Rights in California

Protect Digital Ownership & Repair Rights in California
The Issue
* This is NOT a California ballot initiative; this is a grassroots-led petition to let the State of California know and gain support from groups.
When we buy a game, a device, or software, we should own it.
However, more and more companies are pulling the plug on digital goods we've paid for, shutting down services, and forcing us to either rebuy or discard products that are still functional.
That’s not innovation, it’s exploitation.
The California Ross Scott Act is a proposed state-level law that would:
✅ Stop companies from forcing software shutdowns on devices and digital goods
✅ Require clear labeling of what you’re buying, permanent or limited
✅ Protect your right to repair, modify, and access devices after support ends
✅ Teach digital responsibility and repair literacy in K–12 education
This proposal is inspired by the Stop Killing Games movement, which has already reached over 1 million verified signatures across the EU. Consumers everywhere are speaking up: if it’s not broken, don’t kill it.
California has led the nation in digital rights and repair laws before; this bill takes the next step by demanding transparency, sustainability, and fairness in the digital age.
Sign this petition to show your support for the California Ross Scott Act and send a message to lawmakers:
We deserve absolute ownership, not rented access.
