Protect Condominium Residents from Abusive Boards
The Issue
Sign this petition to demand that Ontario protect condominium residents from corrupt governance & abusive Boards. Our homes should be our sanctuary, not a site of systemic oppression.
Nearly 2 million Ontarians live in condominiums, which are the primary housing option for our most vulnerable— young families, seniors, newcomers, and renters. Yet, weak legislation has allowed rogue boards to operate like unchecked lords of their buildings, turning our homes into spaces of constant anxiety, intimidation, and financial fear.
The Rigged System
The ultimate conflict of interest? Condominium boards currently run their own elections. With zero independent oversight, bad actors stay in power for decades by using fraudulent tactics:
- Proxy Vote Fraud: “I collect Proxy Voting Forms and re-use them each year; I just modify the date on the form. I win every time.” – Mississauga Condo Board Member
- Financial Extortion or Favors: “I paid a $3,000 chargeback but the Board Member said they wouldn’t clear the balance without my vote.” – Ontario Condominium Owner
- Ballot Purging: Boards fabricate fake arrears balances or use aggressive legal threats to strip owners of their voting rights and kick opposing candidates off the ballot.
When governance fails, residents suffer. We face weaponized financial chargebacks, misappropriated funds, kickbacks, and intentionally neglected building maintenance.
Our Call for Immediate Government Intervention
We call on the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery to take immediate legislative action to protect millions of Ontarians living in condominiums:
- Expand CAT Jurisdiction: Immediately empower the Condominium Authority Tribunal (CAT) to fast-track election disputes without requiring expensive court battles.
- Neutral Third-Party Elections: Mandate an independent agency (eg. CAO) oversee all condo voting, completely removing incumbent boards from the process.
- Neutral Control of Proxy Votes: All proxy voting must be submitted directly by an owner to a neutral third party (eg. CAO) to prevent fraud.
- Mandatory Term Limits: Cap continuous board membership at a maximum of two terms (6 years) to prevent entrenched power structures.
Our homes should be our sanctuary, not a site of systemic oppression. Sign this petition to demand Ontario protects condo owners and restores democracy to our homes!
