Protect Cimarron Canyon: request safe traffic planning for new Alderete middle school

The Issue

Why We Are Concerned

🚗 Unsafe Traffic Flow

The current proposed entrance routes heavy school traffic into Cimarron Canyon Drive, a residential street not designed to handle hundreds of cars daily. There are currently only TWO WAYS in and out of the LARGE growing subdivision and the school will be located on one and in close proximity to the other, which is an intersection. (Please see maps below) This creates severe risks for: Children walking to school Residents entering/exiting the neighborhood Runners, bikers, and trail users Emergency vehicle access in the event there is an emergency in the neighborhood. This is the ONLY wide entrance. The other entrance is very slim with curves. Congestion and potential for hazard at the neighborhood park located near entrance

🚸 Trail & Pedestrian Safety

The trail at the school’s frontage already has high pedestrian/biker activity. Increasing traffic near this area dramatically increases the risk of accidents.

🏡 Neighborhood Impact

Residents anticipate significant congestion, noise, and unsafe traffic backups that will alter the character and safety of the neighborhood.

 We respectfully request:

A revised traffic plan that does not use Cimarron Canyon as a main school entrance.

Redirection of school traffic to Resler or Northern Pass, which can safely support higher vehicle volumes.

Or the option to create another entrance/exit

Full neighborhood input before the City approves the final rezoning and construction plan.

This to include an in-person meeting (with virtual participation option) with advanced notice.

Transparency from Canutillo ISD regarding their traffic studies and design rationale.

We support the construction of the school — but not at the expense of safety.

By signing this petition, you are urging:

The City Planning Division
The City Council
The Canutillo ISD School Board

….to take immediate action to revise the traffic design before final approvals are issued.

We ask all residents, parents, and trail users to join us in protecting the safety and wellbeing of our community. A school should enhance a neighborhood, not put it at risk.

Here are the plans for the school  below .

THE GREEN BELOW ARE THE ONLY 2 ENTRANCES TO THE CURRENTLY EXPANDING LARGE SUBDIVISION.
