Growing up in a family where religious beliefs held sway over every decision, I often felt overwhelmed and powerless. As a minor, I was constantly urged to follow a path that was chosen for me, without considering what I truly believed. It was not until I turned 18 that I realized the tremendous impact this coercion had on me. This is a reality for countless children who are pressured into religious conformity by the very individuals who should be nurturing their growth and independent thinking.

Every child deserves the right to explore, question, and ultimately choose their own religious beliefs. This autonomy is crucial for their personal development and psychological well-being. However, when adults impose their own religious beliefs on children, it stifles their independent thought and prevents them from freely exploring their spiritual identity. Such influence should no longer be considered guidance, but instead, it must be recognized as a form of child abuse.

In many countries around the world, the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion is protected under international human rights laws. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child both underscore the importance of protecting children's rights to have freedom of thought and religion. Yet, these rights are often not fully realized due to the pervasive cultural and familial pressures impacting minors.

It's time to amend our understanding and our laws to safeguard our children’s future. We propose that any act by a parent, grandparent, or any family member that influences a minor's religious choice should be considered child abuse. By doing so, we empower children to make informed choices about their beliefs once they have reached an appropriate age of comprehension and maturity.

This change is not only necessary but also entirely achievable. We call upon legislatures to put forward laws that ensure children are protected from any undue religious influence until they turn 18. Additionally, educational systems should be encouraged to provide neutral environments where children can learn about various belief systems without bias.
