Petition to Regulate TikTok and Hold It Accountable for Toxic Content Exposure to Minors

We, the undersigned, call for immediate action to hold TikTok accountable for its role in exposing minors to harmful, toxic, and inappropriate content.

TikTok has become one of the most widely used social media platforms worldwide, with millions of users under 18. Despite its popularity, TikTok has repeatedly failed to adequately moderate its content, allowing harmful material to spread unchecked. From explicit videos and dangerous viral challenges to predatory behaviour and unhealthy beauty standards, the platform’s algorithm frequently promotes damaging content to vulnerable young users.

Shockingly, 25% of TikTok users are aged 10 to 19, meaning a significant number of children are using the platform. Despite the platform's official age requirement of 13 years old, many children much younger than this are accessing TikTok without proper oversight or age verification, leaving them vulnerable to inappropriate and harmful content. Reports indicate that minors are frequently exposed to violent or non-consensual porn on social media platforms, including TikTok. Additionally, harmful trends such as promoting diet injections, fatal challenges, and graphic content continue to circulate with minimal intervention from the platform.

The Problem:

TikTok's algorithm intentionally promotes sensational and harmful content to maximise engagement.
Inadequate content moderation exposes minors to explicit, violent, and harmful material.
Dangerous trends and challenges, often glorified on the platform, have led to injuries and fatalities.
Children are frequently subjected to cyberbullying and exploitation with minimal intervention from TikTok.
Influencers spreading toxic masculinity and harmful gender norms are promoted without sufficient oversight.
The platform fails to enforce its age restriction policies, allowing children under 13 to use TikTok unchecked.
Our Demands:

Heavily regulate TikTok to ensure stricter content moderation and hold it accountable for toxic content aimed at minors.
Enforce Transparency by requiring TikTok to disclose its content recommendation algorithms and moderation processes.
Protect Young Users through age verification systems, content monitoring, and mental health resources.
Hold TikTok Accountable through legal action, imposing fines, and mandating compliance with child protection laws.
Promote Digital Safety Education to teach parents and children how to recognize and report harmful content.
Why This Matters: The mental and physical well-being of children is at risk. Numerous reports and studies have shown the devastating impact of toxic content on young minds, contributing to depression, anxiety, self-harm and harm to others. Platforms like TikTok must be held responsible for their negligence in prioritising profit over the safety of their users.
