Protect Banyan Drive - Makaokū!

Protect Banyan Drive - Makaokū!
The Issue
EDIT (April 2026): Legislative Update
HB2616 did not advance to the Senate and is no longer moving forward this session.
SB2001 has since been amended to INCLUDE Lineal Descendants as decision-makers in the redevelopment of Makaokū.
Due to these critical changes, Hui Kūākaʻananuʻu now SUPPORTS SB2001 for its inclusion of Lineal Descendants. The bill is currently in conference.
This petition has been updated to reflect these developments and to continue uplifting the importance of Lineal Descendant leadership in all decisions regarding Makaokū.
The History and Redevelopment of Banyan Drive – Makaokū
Makaokū (commonly called Banyan Drive) is ancestral ʻāina, and has been stewarded by Lineal Descendants long before the State of Hawaiʻi existed. Banyan Drive is up for redevelopment. Currently, NO Lineal Descendants have a seat at the table during the planning process. Makaokū is storied land. It holds centuries of genealogy, cultural practice, and relationships that require Lineal Descendant stewardship, NOT just state oversight.
Support the Inclusion of Lineal Descendants in Decision-Making
Any redevelopment of Makaokū must formally include Lineal Descendants as decision-makers.
During this legislative session, two bills were introduced:
HB2616 (NO LONGER ADVANCING) and SB2001 SD1 HD2 (UPDATED & NOW SUPPORTED)
SB2001 has been amended to include Lineal Descendants, awarding them a vote at a table in the decision-making process. Because of these important amendments, Hui Kūākaʻananuʻu supports SB2001 SD1 HD2 as it has moved through conference.
