Some officials and lawmakers continue to describe Mexican gray wolves as a “danger to humans.” The facts simply do not support that claim. There has never been a documented attack on a human by a wild Mexican gray wolf in recorded history. Mexican gray wolves are naturally shy and avoid people whenever possible. Like most wildlife, their instinct is to flee from human activity, not approach it. In fact, wolves play an important ecological role by helping keep ecosystems balanced through the regulation of deer and elk populations. Ironically, the real danger in this situation goes the other direction. Humans are responsible for the majority of wolf deaths each year, through illegal shootings, vehicle collisions, and lethal removals. Fear should not guide wildlife policy — science and facts should. The Mexican gray wolf is one of the most endangered mammals in North America, and its recovery represents decades of conservation work. Misrepresenting these animals as a threat undermines that progress and spreads unnecessary fear. Please continue to speak up and help protect this incredible species.
