Protect and invest in Black Montgomery County Public School Students NOW!
The Issue
Black MCPS students routinely score lower on reading and math assessments, face higher suspension rates, and graduate less prepared for college. They regularly report that they are treated differently because of their race and they don't feel they belong when they are in school.
This isn't a failure of Black children or their families. It's a failure of the people who create the conditions for disparities in the public education institutions that Black families help to fund.
- Black children deserve to be safe at school.
- Black children deserve to receive excellent instruction from educators who believe in their brilliance and respect who they are as individuals.
- Black children deserve a school experience that prepares them for a successful future.
Equity exists when every student has what they need to succeed. Our public schools promise equity for all students but only deliver it for some.
Decades of attempts by Black students, families and advocates to collaborate with MCPS, unions and county government leaders have led to decades of broken promises and further harm to Black students - while other student groups with needs and demands enjoy rapid, funded responses and direct engagement from decision makers.
The time for change is NOW.
Join the call for leaders to make Black students' public school experiences and outcomes live up to the words and commitments in existing MCPS plans and equity statements.
Call on MCPS and the Board of Education to immediately deliver the targeted educational resources and support systems for Black students that MCPS's own Dr. Nyah Hamlett, MCPS's Chief of Equity has already said are necessary and deserved.
- Designate Black students as a Special Population of the Board of Education.
- Create line item funding to address the crisis-level needs of Black students as a Special Population.
Please sign this petition. You and everyone else who signs will be putting your power collective power to work to make better todays and tomorrows for Black children in Montgomery County Maryland.
