The Issue

As an advocate for neurodivergent individuals, I cannot stand by as our disabled and neurodivergent students are pushed into a system that treats them as "broken" patients. True inclusion means embracing every unique brain and designing classrooms universally to support all from the start. This is a call to action for all 50 states to protect our students from the peril of outdated perspectives and harmful policies.

Recently, the federal government made a concerning decision by transferring the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) from the Department of Education to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This move dangerously shifts oversight from education to health, implying that neurodivergent students require medical intervention instead of educational support. We cannot allow this to perpetuate.

The history of institutions like Willowbrook stands as a haunting reminder of what happens when disabled individuals are segregated and medicalized. To prevent history from repeating, it is imperative that every State takes the lead in mandating Neuroinclusion and adopting Tier 1 Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. By doing so, we can ensure every student thrives within an educational setting tailored to support their unique learning needs.

Statistics show that when educational systems embrace Universal Design for Learning and inclusion practices, all students benefit from a richer, more supportive learning environment. For instance, schools adopting UDL frameworks have reported notable improvements in student engagement, academic performance, and emotional well-being across the board. These promising outcomes highlight the positive impact of educational rather than medical approaches.

It is up to us to hold our state's educational system accountable. By mandating Neuroinclusion and adopting UDL, we pave the way for an equitable future where every student’s dignity is honored, and their potential is realized. Please join me in urging your personal State lawmakers to take decisive action against the medicalization of our students and ensure a future where every neurodivergent student is valued as a unique learner, not "broken" or in need of fixing.
